I am an Euroscepticus like most English, even though I live in the heart of the European Union and only 30km north of the European capital.
The European Union is an artificial contruction ruled by the three big countries: the UK, France and Germany. Its a capitalist construction and doesn't respect the independence of its members.
The Belgian constitution says "Belgium is an independent and souvereign nation" and king swears "I'll defend our independence and territory". Our independence is attacked by the EU. I used to be pro-Europe but after the bankrupcy of Sabena i've changed my mind. 10.000 jobs could have been saved if the EU gave permission for state support. The EU didn't allow it and said, there is only place for 3 big airlines. Which is bullshit of course.
Isn't a governement responsible for the well being of its citizens? Isn't it the job of a governement to creat jobs?
Because of this disgusting capitalist attitude of the European Union, Belgium lost its national pride, its showpiece to the world. Lots of people say "It is the law of the economy that sabena went bankrupt" but i think there is more than just economy besides if you are good in economics then you should know that the bankrupcy costed the Belgian governement more than keeping sabena in the air and that the bankrupcy damaged the Belgian economy in general.
I think we have the right to choose for sabena after all it is OUR tax money and not from the EU. The EU wouldn't even survive if the members stopped paying the european institutions.
But that the renovation of the Berlaymont building in Brussels costed the Belgian governement already EUR 1.5 billion is ok, you don't hear Europe complaining.
The debt of sabena was EUR 2 billion and if the governement gave EUR 600 million sabena could have been saved and made profitable. So instead of creating jobs and saving the national airline, our governement thinks its a wise decission to spend Belgian tax money on a stupid and really ugly building. I put my hope on the Danish presidency, Denmark is a country that is against further European integration.
Now the Euro, Belgium lost 2 national symbols in 2 months, first its airline and than the currency. I mean does Belgium still excist? What is a country without a currency, now we have a currency without a country. The Euro is pathetic, it is one of the weakest currencies. It lost 40% of its value against the US dollar and its still not recovering. Now they are letting countries in that have weak economies, with GDP's smaller than the South African GDP, why not let Bosnia in?
By letting weak countries in the European Monetary Union the Euro will weaken some more. They expect 1 Euro for $0.4, bad huh, certainly when you know it used to be EUR 1.2 for $1.
We should have seen it coming though, we should have stopped the whole operation. If the Euro crashes, Europe will get sucked in and there is no way back.
Belgium should reintroduce the Belgian Franc and play on safe. When the Euro crashes we will be safe plus the Belgian franc was one of the strongest currencies in the world.
Europe is ok when its a free trade zone but Europe is becoming a country, some sort of ersatz federation without an army and constitution. Not that i want a European constitution.
One of the reasons why there should be more European integration is to break the power of the US. Who cares about the US, they are not going to attack us. Let the US bomb some countries, its their money, as long as it doesn't use European money and European soldiers its fine by me.
Let the American tax payer pay the wars.
The other reason is, economic reasons. Norway and Switzerland are rich and they are not even in the EU, don't see why we would get poor if we stepped out of the European Union.
In fact, Belgium pays more than it actually gets back from Europe, so we would have more money for our country and to create jobs. State support is important and it sucks that it is not allowed.
